Cielito Lindo

Crinklechips I bought this album as I really love piano trios. Sunna has a lovely straight ahead style whilst throwing in the odd avant-garde left turn.

What really surprised me is I keep coming back to her again and again. This is music that gets under your skin. All three are consummate musicians.

Check out ‘Summertime’ for the perfect example of how to cover a classic in style. Favorite track: Cielito Lindo.

Mike Sierra A perfect Album.
Thank you! Favorite track: Workaround.

Alan Hall So much freshness and lyricism in the three tracks that make up the pre release. Cant wait for the rest. Favorite track: Dry Cycle.
Eclecticon thumbnail
Eclecticon This has the best version of 'Summertime' I think I've ever heard. Bassist Thorgrimur Jonsson and drummer Scott McLemore refuse to settle into a comfortable, easy-listening background. As a result, the tune has an unsettled, unsettling quality quite at odds with the lyrics (which don't feature in this version). Yes... the living is easy. Perhaps too easy? Is it a trap? Favorite track: Summertime.

This the third album from this trio in the space of five years documents the development of an ensemble that is as much a collaborative effort as anything the pianist has ever done. All three members contribute compositions, as well there are pieces by George Gershwin and Tom Waits. The title track is a Mexican folk song and is a continuation of the pianists pull toward South America that she alluded to with her composition "Momento" from her previous album.

"Notwithstanding the crowded piano trio landscape, Cielito Lindo is a very beautiful, melodic, contemplative piece of Iceland by an outstandingly democratic trio, you discover more riches in it every time you listen." — Mary Leamington, London Jazz News, UK

4 stars **** "another young European jazz piano trio currently standing out from the crowd”. — Selwyn Harris, Jazzwise UK

"Once again, Gunnlaugs and her trio achieve their discerning balance of tuneful accessibility, compositional distinctiveness and the constantly-undulating landscape of delicacy and high energy. A remarkable achievement – and a very fine album." — APReviews.com

5 stars ***** "timeless jazz with emotional density and presence” — IJ. Bierman, Nordische Musik, Germany

“...natural interplay, beautiful and fun compositions, equal and balanced group sound and unselfish creativity” — Sasha Marko, Orkester Journalen, Sweden

Sunna Gunnlaugs Iceland

"Fine musicians seem to be among Iceland's most visible exports these days, and pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs is proof that jazz is as much a part of the picture as the pop of Björk or Sigur Ros."
